A month after its formation, Nickelsville remains in a church parking lot in the U District.
The ad-hoc encampment for the homeless, named after Seattle’s mayor, started in an industrial area before migrating to Discovery Park and then its current location. City leaders have cajoled and threatened its residents, but the approximately 100 homeless seem committed to staying in the tent city.
So you’ve heard a lot about Nickesville, but have you actually gone inside it?
Recently, I paid the encampment of about 100 people a visit. I asked resident Robert Brenot to give me a tour and tell me why he remained in Nickelsville.
