Earth First! Activists stage showdown with power plant over 450-acre swap in Florida

A showdown is brewing near Port Mayaca in Martin County as a group of environmental protesters are camping out for a second night tonight demanding access to a natural swamp on land owned by Florida Power and Light Co.
“If they don’t open the swamp, we will cross the tracks and risk arrest,” said Peter Shultz of Hobe Sound, a member of Everglades Earth First. The Barley Barber Swamp is on property FPL uses for its power-generation plant west of Indiantown. Once open to the public for tours, the 450-acre swamp was closed after Sept. 11, 2001 for security concerns, FPL officials said.

Florida camping ordinance targets homeless

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – With shelters over-flowing, hundreds of homeless people in Collier County are left with nowhere to turn but the woods. Now, some people want to make it illegal for them to camp there.
“You basically try to hide out as best as you can, where you’re not noticed,” homeless man Chris tells us of his living conditions.
He says most finds spots off in the woods, but some people tell us homeless people are setting up camp too close to their homes.
“They shouldn’t be sleeping around here outside because its disturbing the people who live around here,” an East Naples resident says.
