Protect Wild Bison

You may have heard that the wild bison was driven nearly to extinction at the end of the 19th century. You may have also heard the myth that bison conservation has been a success; that there are now over 300,000 bison in North America.
The truth is that of that 300,000, only 20,000 or so are wild, and of that number, only 10,000 or so are continously wild and genetically pure. Those 10,000 truly wild bison are divided between two National Parks; Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada, and Yellowstone National Park in the US.
The cattle industry has been a constant threat to the future of wild bison. In the case of Yellowstone, hundreds of wild bison are killed every year to maintain the domination of the cattle industry over public grasslands. This winter has been particularly bad. This winter 1194 Yellowstone bison have been slaughtered so far (as of March 27). That makes this year will the largest wild buffalo slaughter since the 19th century.
Only one group is working in the field every day to document this injustice and lobby for the lasting protection of this valuable herd. They are the Buffalo Field Campaign. Please visit their website to learn more about the Yellowstone bison and BFC’s brave efforts to defend them.
Canada’s wild bison are also in jeopardy of complete extermination. Read this article to learn more.
